Prosecco Hills: Food & Wine Day Trip
The Prosecco Hills of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2019: terraced vineyards, hill villages, historic wineries and landscapes that shift with the seasons. From Mogliano Veneto, and from Casa Lilla on Via Selve, the area is under an hour by car, perfect for a day trip of tastings, walks and slow lunches. This guide covers routes, villages, activities, the best seasons and how to plan a half or full day without rushing.
The Prosecco Hills: what to expect
Prosecco Superiore DOCG is born in a compact hill area between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, in the heart of the province of Treviso. It is not just «drinking bubbles»: it is a cultural landscape where vineyards, steep terraces (ciglioni), villages and farmsteads have coexisted for centuries. UNESCO recognised this balance between people and nature, making the zone one of the most authentic food-and-wine destinations in north-eastern Italy.
From Mogliano Veneto distances work in your favour. Conegliano is about 35–40 km (40–50 minutes by car); Valdobbiadene about 45–50 km (50–60 minutes). You do not need to stay overnight in the hills: with a base like Casa Lilla, private parking, a kitchen for picnics, space to unwind on return, you can spend a full or half day and come back calmly in the evening.
- UNESCO site since 2019: a unique wine-growing landscape in Europe.
- Prosecco Superiore DOCG: mainly Charmat method, fresh and fruity profile.
- From Mogliano: 40–60 minutes by car to the main villages.
- Ideal combined with Venice and Treviso: a green alternative to the city.
Driving routes from Mogliano Veneto
The classic itinerary starts in Mogliano, takes the A27 motorway north (towards Belluno) and exits at Conegliano or Pieve di Soligo depending on your first stop. From Conegliano you follow the Prosecco Road (SP635 and scenic variants) towards Valdobbiadene, through vineyards, winery signs and marked viewpoints.
A more scenic alternative avoids part of the motorway: from Mogliano you can reach Treviso and continue on provincial roads towards Conegliano, slower but beautiful in spring and autumn. In summer and on harvest weekends local traffic can increase: leaving early gives better light and easier parking in villages.
- Fast route: Mogliano → A27 → Conegliano → Prosecco Road → Valdobbiadene.
- Scenic route: Mogliano → Treviso → hill roads → Conegliano.
- Indicative driving time: 40–60 minutes to the heart of the hills.
- Sat nav helps, but also follow «Prosecco» signs and UNESCO markers along the road.
At Casa Lilla you have enclosed parking: leave the car safely in the morning and return in the evening with no extra cost. If you hire a car at Treviso or Marco Polo airport, the hills are one of the first trips to schedule.
Villages not to miss: Valdobbiadene and Conegliano
Conegliano is the «wine city»: home to a historic oenology school, a compact centre with squares, arcades and the castle. It is the natural starting point if you want a museum, a café in the piazza and then climb towards the hills. Valdobbiadene, to the north, is the heart of Superiore DOCG: hillier, more panoramic, with the famous Cartizze area nearby.
Between the two poles you find villages like Follina (Cistercian abbey), Vittorio Veneto (two historic centres), Pieve di Soligo and Susegana (with Collalto castle). Do not try to see them all in one day: pick 2–3 stops and enjoy a slow pace.
- Conegliano: cultural base, wine shop and start of the Prosecco Road.
- Valdobbiadene: views, historic wineries, Cartizze zone.
- Follina: Romanesque abbey, a spiritual and photographic pause.
- Susegana: hilltop castle, wide view over the Veneto plain.
Parking in villages is limited: on peak-season Sundays arrive early or use areas just outside the centre and walk a few minutes.
Wineries, cycling and local food
Cellar tastings are the core experience. Many estates accept visits by appointment; others have shops with informal tasting. Prices are accessible compared with more famous wine regions, with a family feel. Always ask if booking is required and if children are welcome, many wineries are used to international visitors.
Cycling is well developed: the Prosecco Cycle Route and marked paths link vineyards and villages. Bringing your own bike or hiring locally (Valdobbiadene and Conegliano have services) turns the trip into an active adventure. Casa Lilla provides bicycles for local use, but for the hills a trekking bike or e-bike hired on site is better.
- Tastings: book ahead on peak weekends.
- Prosecco Cycle Route: half-day to full-day itineraries.
- Local food: polenta, mountain cheeses, cured meats, tiramisu (Treviso origins).
- Osterias and farm stays: slow lunch with vineyard views, booking advised.
Do not drive after too many tastings: designate a sober driver, book a local driver or limit yourself to one or two tastings with spittoon. Returning to Mogliano in the evening for a barbecue in the garden is the perfect ending.
Best season, half day or full day
Spring (April–May) brings intense green and blossom; autumn (September–October) is harvest, warm colours and a festive mood. Summer is beautiful but busier and hotter in the hills: start early and seek shade at midday. Winter is quiet, wineries open by appointment, stripped landscapes but atmospheric.
Half day (4–5 hours on site): one village, one winery, one viewpoint, suitable if you already have Venice or Treviso planned on the same trip. Full day: Conegliano in the morning, scenic climb, lunch at an osteria, Valdobbiadene in the afternoon with a final tasting before return. With children, half a day is often more realistic.
- Spring/autumn: ideal climate and landscape at its best.
- Summer: sun and crowds, avoid midday heat on the hills.
- Half day: 1 village + 1 winery + light lunch.
- Full day: Conegliano → Prosecco Road → Valdobbiadene with a long lunch.
Casa Lilla as your base for the Prosecco Hills
Staying at Casa Lilla means having the best of both worlds: fast links to Venice and Treviso, and the freedom to explore the hills by car without changing hotels. Enclosed private parking matters if you return late or bring winery purchases. The equipped kitchen allows picnics or light dinners after a day of tastings.
The 100 m² house with garden suits families up to 7 guests (+ a small child): after a hill trip, children can play outside while adults relax. Self check-in and a location between the two airports make it easy to combine arrival, a Prosecco day trip and a Venice visit in the same week.
- Parking included: no extra cost for hire or own car.
- Distance: 40–60 minutes to Conegliano/Valdobbiadene.
- Kitchen and garden: ideal for picnics and post-tasting evenings.
- Combinable with Venice by train and Treviso as a day trip.
If Prosecco is one reason for your Veneto trip, Mogliano Veneto is a smarter base than central Venice: closer to the hills, more space, less stress, and the bubbles are just as excellent.
FAQ
How long does it take from Mogliano Veneto to Valdobbiadene?
About 50–60 minutes by car, depending on traffic and route (A27 motorway or scenic roads via Treviso). Conegliano is slightly closer: about 40–50 minutes.
Can you visit the Prosecco Hills without a car?
It is possible but less flexible. From Mogliano you can reach Conegliano by train and then use local buses, taxis or organised tours. For scattered wineries and viewpoints, a car (or e-bike hired locally) remains the best option.
What is the best time of year for the trip?
Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) offer pleasant weather, beautiful colours and harvest season. Summer works if you start early; winter is peaceful but with fewer tourist activities open.
